How to Brush Your Dentures

Jan 15, 2024

According to the American College of Prosthodontics (ACP), 90% of those with edentulism (fully or partially missing teeth) wear dentures. Dentures can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, and how well you care for them will largely determine their lifespan. Proper brushing is essential, so if you are one of the millions of denture wearers out there, here are some pointers for you.

How To Brush Your Dentures

Your dentures must be brushed just like your regular teeth to keep plaque and tartar from building up. However, the technique you use is much different than what you are probably used to. When brushing dentures, you should:

  • Remove your dentures first.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, preferably one designed especially for dentures.
  • Avoid using toothpaste, as it is too abrasive and may scratch your artificial teeth. Instead, use a denture cleaner or mild soap
  • Brush all surfaces of your dentures, especially any areas that may have held adhesive.
  • Rinse your dentures thoroughly in cool or lukewarm water. Never use hot water because it could warp your dentures.
  • Brush and floss your surrounding teeth if you are wearing partials or dental flippers.

Brush your dentures at least twice a day, just like you would otherwise. And if you still have some teeth remaining, continue to schedule regular cleaning appointments, as well.

Proper Care Techniques

Aside from brushing, it's important to care for your dentures by removing them every night while you sleep. In that way, your mouth has a chance to "rest". Soak your dentures overnight in a cleaning solution to remove additional plaque and bacteria. Visit a dentist for regular fittings, as this will help you avoid excessive wear and tear on your dentures.
