Cracked or Chipped Teeth? Here Are Your Options!

Jan 15, 2024

In 2018, Dentistry IQ reported that cracked teeth were more common then than they were in 1964. Fortunately, so are the options for fixing them. If you're one of the many people who suffer from chipped or cracked teeth, here are some possible solutions.

Composite Fillings

Dental decay can cause chips or cracks to form on the top of a tooth. One way of dealing with this decay is through composite fillings. Composite fillings differ from regular fillings in that they cover the entire top surface of a damaged tooth. As such, they provide greater aesthetics and support for the remaining tooth structure.

Root Canals

Sometimes the tooth is only damaged on the inside and the outer "shell" remains virtually intact. In that case, a root canal could be needed to move the damaged inner pulp. Once that's been accomplished, a composite filling is typically placed over the top. Thanks to advances in dental medicine, root canals are now virtually pain free, and can often be accomplished in a single visit.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are essentially a "cap" that's placed over the top of a cracked tooth. This eliminates pain and sensitivity while allowing you to eat and chew normally. In addition, dental crowns are custom-fitted and designed to match the color of your surrounding teeth as much as possible. Crowns are a long-term solution that can last anywhere from ten to 15 years.

Veneers

Veneers are a cosmetic dental procedure that can address multiple issues. They involve porcelain or composite material that is permanently adhered to your teeth and shaped in a manner that hides imperfections. Aside from chipped and cracked teeth, some other problems that might easily be corrected with veneers include:

  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Uneven teeth
  • Minor crowding and bite irregularities
