How Dental Insurance Works: An Overview

Jan 15, 2024

Studies show there is a direct correlation between having dental insurance and regular dental visits. But that doesn't mean those who have a dental plan always know how their benefits work. A lot of people have questions about their coverage, particularly when seeing a new dentist. If you're wondering how dental insurance works, the following information will prove helpful.

How Does Dental Insurance Work?

With dental insurance, you typically have a deductible that must be met before your policy kicks in. Once you have met your deductible, you'll usually be responsible for a co-insurance amount. For example, if you have an 80/20 plan, you would pay 20% out of pocket and the remaining amount would be covered by your insurance.

Some policies also have a cap on the amount of expenses they will cover annually. So if you exceed that amount, you would be responsible for 100% of the costs over and above that.

What's Covered?

Different procedures are typically covered in varying amounts. For example, many plans cover:

  • 100% for preventative services such as cleanings and x-rays
  • 80% of basic services like fillings and extractions
  • 50% of major procedures such as dentures and bridges

Some plans may also include limited coverage for orthodontic treatment. However, cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening are generally not covered. Every policy is different, so it's important to confirm the exact benefits with your plan's administrator first.
