Halitosis: How Your Dental Routine Can Help

Jan 16, 2024

Bad breath is something most of us will experience at some point. But for an estimated 80 million Americans, halitosis is a chronic, ongoing problem. Whether you regularly have foul-smelling breath or only notice it occasionally, the right dental routine can help-here's how.

The Importance of Good Oral Hygiene

Dr. Walter Loesche, a scientist with the University of Michigan, estimates there are 20 billion microbes in the average person's mouth. Those microbes reproduce every five hours and will multiply to 100 million if you go 24 hours without brushing.

Good oral hygiene is needed if you are to keep harmful microbes in check. That means brushing at least twice a day for two minutes each session. Using a soft-bristled brush, ensure you cover all surfaces of your teeth. After brushing, floss between your teeth to remove any food particles that brushing may have missed.

Brush your tongue using a gentle, back-and-forth motion with your toothbrush. Alternatively, you may use a tongue scraper and work from back to front in overlapping strokes until you have covered the entire surface.

Don't Skip Routine Dental Cleanings

Regular brushing alone won't remove all plaque from your teeth. If left unchecked, plaque can turn into tartar, which can then lead to gum disease and bone loss. Should this happen, it will become even harder to get rid of halitosis.

Good oral health and fresh breath require at least two dental visits per year. Regular dental checkups that include a full set of x-rays can let you know if there are other problems such as tooth decay that might be contributing to your halitosis.
