5 Tips to Speed Up Healing After Bone Grafts

Jan 15, 2024

According to Science Direct, more than 1.5 million bone grafting procedures are performed in the United States each year. And Cleveland Clinic claims that the average recovery time is anywhere from 3 to 9 months. The exact timeframe will vary based on your age and health; however, there are some things you can do in order to speed up the process.

5 Tips to Speed Up Healing After Bone Grafts

Reduce Swelling

You may notice some swelling for a few days following your bone graft. Use an ice pack on your face 2 or 3 times a day for around 10 minutes to alleviate swelling and minimize bleeding.

Manage the Bleeding

Some bleeding is to be expected for 2-3 days after surgery. Even so, you can manage this bleeding by keeping the protective gauze in place. If you do notice excessive bleeding, bite down gently on the bandage to help minimize it. Should you experience excessive bleeding, please contact your dentist at once.

Monitor Your Diet

For a week or so after surgery, consume only soft foods that do not require any chewing. After that, you can gradually start adding regular foods in but will need to avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for several weeks until the incision has completely healed.

Stop Smoking

Smoking can delay healing because it restricts blood flow to your gums. It also makes you more susceptible to dry sockets, a condition that develops when the required blood clot fails to form at the incision site.

Brush, Floss, and Rinse

Brush and floss normally, but avoid coming in contact with the incision site. Use a warm saltwater rinse two or three times daily. This will help keep your wound clean and well hydrated.
